    Hello everyone,

From Northwestern Bulgaria, and especially the Vratsa region, we would like to share one important cultural tradition connected with food, hospitality, and community life: the idea that the table is not only a place for eating, but also a place for gathering, storytelling, respect, and belonging.

In many local families and villages, guests are welcomed with homemade food, seasonal products, and dishes prepared according to family traditions. The act of inviting someone to the table is a sign of openness and friendship. Meals are often shared slowly, with conversation, memories, and stories about family, local celebrations, agricultural work, and community life.

A very characteristic element of our local food heritage is the connection between the meal and the seasons. Traditional dishes are often prepared with vegetables, herbs, dairy products, beans, bread, honey, and preserved foods, reflecting both the landscape and the rhythm of rural life. During holidays and family gatherings, food becomes part of the ritual itself — it brings generations together and keeps local knowledge alive.

In the Vratsa region, food traditions are also closely linked to local identity and tourism. Visitors can experience not only local tastes, but also the stories behind them: how food is prepared, why certain dishes are connected with specific holidays, and how hospitality shapes the relationship between hosts and guests.

We believe that preserving Mediterranean and Balkan food heritage means preserving much more than recipes. It means protecting social customs, local memory, intergenerational knowledge, and the simple but powerful tradition of eating together.
