The Mediterranean Diet is one of the world’s healthiest and most sustainable lifestyles, as well as a unique cultural heritage. How can we communicate the Mediterranean Diet today in a way that is more relatable, relevant, and inspiring, so that it truly resonates with society—especially with younger generations?

To make it relatable today, especially for younger generations, we need to present it as a lifestyle that connects food, people, place, identity, sustainability and enjoyment.
Young people are not inspired by rules. They are inspired by stories, experiences and values. So instead of saying “eat more vegetables, olive oil and fish”, we should show the Mediterranean Diet as something vibrant and contemporary: cooking together, sharing meals, supporting local producers, reducing waste, choosing seasonal food, discovering traditional recipes in new formats, and creating moments of connection in everyday life.
It should also be communicated through the channels and language young people actually use — short videos, social media storytelling, visual content, food challenges, local ambassadors, influencers, schools, festivals and hands-on workshops. The message should be simple: the Mediterranean Diet is not old-fashioned; it is creative, social, climate-friendly and deeply connected to well-being.
Most importantly, we need to make it feel accessible. It should not be presented as something perfect, expensive or distant, but as something people can adapt to their own lives — one meal, one local ingredient, one shared moment at a time.
In this way, the Mediterranean Diet can become more than a heritage concept. It can become a living culture that speaks to today’s society and inspires younger generations to see food as a source of health, community, sustainability and joy.
