The Mediterranean Diet European Cluster is a transnational network aimed at unifying all the agents involved in the Mediterranean Diet; to help them boost their activities with knowledge, tools, and a common strategy. In a globalized world, the Cluster puts in value the potential asset the Mediterranean Diet can be for small businesses, tourism agents, and producers. The Vision of the Mediterranean Diet Cluster
The vision of the Mediterranean Diet (MD) Cluster is to activate a long-term, transnational alliance that harnesses the economic, cultural, environmental, and social value of the Mediterranean Diet to shape resilient, inclusive, and innovative rural ecosystems. Rooted in the MD.net project’s holistic approach, the Cluster emerges as a pragmatic and strategic response to global transitions—such as climate change, post-COVID recovery, and digitalization—through the lens of sustainable development. The MD is not only recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage but is reimagined here as a tangible, systemic model for smart specialization, healthy lifestyles, and eco-conscious entrepreneurship. Its vision integrates agri-food production, hospitality, mobility, and tourism into a cross-sectoral ecosystem guided by the six pillars of the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan, the Green Deal, and the UN 2030 Agenda
At its core, the MD Cluster aspires to be a platform for integration and empowerment. It strengthens rural economies by connecting micro- and small enterprises with knowledge institutions, training bodies, public authorities, and digital innovators in a “quadruple helix” collaboration. This strategy enhances value chains, supports green and circular businesses, accelerates digital transition, and promotes health-oriented products and services. The vision includes developing critical mass through transnational networking: overcoming the limits of small-scale production by aggregating value across regions and standardizing quality through shared branding (MD Declaration). Importantly, it builds interoperability between fragmented initiatives and territories, offering shared governance, joint actions, and mutual support among Mediterranean regions.
This vision is not merely aspirational—it is grounded in the tangible outcomes of MD.net: four years of co-creation, experimentation, and capitalization have produced tools (databases, living labs, MD Platform), strategic documents (Action Plans, Policy Recommendations), and stakeholder pacts (MD Declaration). The MD Cluster envisions a Europe in which rural communities are no longer peripheral but leading actors in innovation, sustainability, and internationalization. It proposes a future where the Mediterranean Diet is not only preserved, but transformed into a global economic and cultural driver—capable of engaging public institutions, businesses, and civil society in a shared pathway toward prosperity and cohesion.


What is the Med-Diet Eurocluster (MDG Eurocluster)
The Med-Diet Eurocluster is the institutional and operational legacy of the MD.net project—a permanent, transnational structure that connects territories, stakeholders, and sectors around the Mediterranean Diet economy. Built as a “light cluster initiative” with the potential to evolve into a formal legal organization, the MDG Eurocluster embodies the capitalization strategy of MD.net: transforming four years of experimentation, stakeholder engagement, and co-creation into a sustainable, multi-level governance and service system. It acts simultaneously as a network, a coordination hub, and an innovation engine, offering tools for collaboration, business support, training, research, and internationalization.
Structured as a hub-and-spoke model, the Cluster relies on a central Board for international coordination, a Technical Team for operational support, and territorial bodies in participating regions. Currently, it brings together over 200 stakeholders who have signed the Med Diet Declaration, creating a shared identity and a common platform for joint action across sectors such as agriculture, food & beverage, logistics, tourism (Ho.Re.Ca.), and creative industries. Its activities are organized into four pillars: Networking, Innovation, Training, and Internationalisation. These are supported by services such as business matchmaking, access to funding, digital tools, and participation in EU programmes (e.g. COSME, ECCP, Horizon Europe, S3).
The MDG Eurocluster is positioned to respond to systemic challenges: digitalization, green transition, fragmented markets, and the need for scale in niche production. It supports MSMEs in improving competitiveness, adopting innovation, and reaching international markets—particularly in health-related products and sustainable tourism. It also strengthens links with global institutions like UNESCO and FAO-GIAHS to ensure that economic development is aligned with cultural safeguarding and ecological sustainability. Beyond its technical role, the Eurocluster is a policy tool: it connects local ecosystems with European and national strategies (S3, Farm to Fork, Circular Economy), offering regional administrations a mechanism to embed MD-based innovation into public policy. In sum, the Med-Diet Eurocluster is a strategic infrastructure to multiply impact, connect fragmented initiatives, and scale up the Mediterranean Diet economy in a way that is resilient, inclusive, and future-proof.

- "The “Agrupamento de Escolas Pinheiro e Rosa” (AEPRosa), composed by nine schools and established in 2013, it is an organizational unit with its own administration and management bodies, consisting of the integration of nine schools of different teaching levels and cycles, aiming to achieving the following purposes: a) Guarantee and reinforce the coherence of the educational project and the pedagogical quality of the schools and pre-school education establishments that integrate AEPRosa, in a logic of vertical articulation of the different school levels and cycles; b) Provide a sequential and articulated path for students covered in a given geographic area and favor the appropriate transition between levels and cycles of education; c) Overcoming situations of isolation in schools and pre-school education establishments and preventing social and school exclusion; d) Streamline the management of human and material resources in schools and pre-school education establishments that are part of AEPRosa. Each of the schools that integrate the AEProsa maintained its own identity and denomination. Geographically, it is possible to find AEProsa schools in Faro, Conceição de Faro, Estoi, Santa Bárbara de Nexe and Bordeira. The “Escola Secundária de Pinheiro e Rosa” (ESPR) (Secondary School) is an institution that began its activities in the 1994/95 school year, located in the northern part of the “União das Freguesias de Faro” (Sé and São Pedro). The school has a building formed by three interconnected blocks, sports facilities, green areas, playing fields and recreational spaces. All areas of the school have computers and internet access or wireless internet access. All classrooms have a computer, video projector and sound system and most have interactive whiteboards. The school has always been at the forefront of the use of information and communication technologies, having even received the ENIS (European Network of Innovative Schools) certification: the use of the interactive whiteboard has become a common pedagogical practice, the electronic identification card is used, and summaries are carried out on an electronic platform. At ESPR, the predominant scientific areas are Mathematics, Experimental Sciences, Humanities, Languages and Socioeconomic Sciences and the areas of professional training are Information Technology, Health, Sports, Tourism and Hospitality."
- "As part of the education of the youngest, future chefs, we always strive for the principles of a healthy balanced and sustainable diet and explore the treasures of our region. In this sense, we could not, in any way, discard the Mediterranean Diet, which was present in numerous activities developed. Thus, in the “Eco-Escolas” (Eco-Schools) program, we develop activities that promote healthy and sustainable eating, having as principles the Mediterranean lifestyle/Mediterranean diet. The Association, inserted in the Regional Register of the show referred to in the L.R. 6/2007, in recent years it has managed numerous Events (POC, PON, Festivals and Reviews) becoming an important reference point for Municipalities, Schools and Private individuals throughout Cilento.
- Our Association operates within the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, it has been active for over 10 years in the School Theater sector in the Campania region, staging a musical theatrical show "Ancel Keys and the recipe of 100 years "(also translated into English and Portuguese) it talks about the birth of the Mediterranean Diet, it is about the story of the famous American scholar, father of the theorization of the lifestyle - Ancel Keys. - We are a small association of volunteers who love nature and the landscape who care about the fate of the suggestive works of the Canicattì-Riesi sulfur railway, in particular those located in the section between Riesi and Sommatino. These works of art include a partially tunneled helicoidal (there are few in the world), impressive viaducts and numerous tunnels, as well as the toll booths and the Trabia Miniere station, at the ruins of the viaduct over the Salso river, all inserted in an extraordinary landscape context. Although the route as a whole is fairly intact, it has nevertheless suffered the effects of time and abandonment: two viaducts have collapsed, two tunnels have collapsed, one has been blocked by works on the state road that leads from the Mintina junction to Riesi, while the Trabia Miniere station has suffered heavy vandalism. Furthermore, nowadays two viaduct pylons still standing seem to be at risk of being undermined. Our ambition is to preserve and protect these unique works of art to deliver them to future generations but also to create a way for green mobility in the midst of nature. In this way we want to enhance not only the extraordinary characteristics of this unfinished railway, but also the whole landscape that frames it, the basin of the Trabia-Tallarita mine, already subject to landscape restrictions.

- "The Cipolla di Vatolla Association is a voluntary association, with a private nature, non-profit, with public social utility value and with public interest relevance, founded in 2014. Since its inception, the Association, in addition to organizing the Vatolla Onion Festival for 6 years, has organized various events. The Association participated in the Via Silente Project in May 2016 in Castelnuovo Cilento. It collaborates with the Campania Region, Scabec, the Municipality of Perdifumo, the Youth Association “Il mondo che vorrei”, the Alento-Montestella Mountain Community, the Cilento Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, the Festinalente Association. It also participated, in January 2018, in the television program ""I soliti ignoti"" hosted by Amadeus on Rai Uno, with one of his representatives invited because he wove The Onion of Vatolla. On 4 September 2020 we hosted the Tosca concert as part of the ""Intrecci"" project aimed at promoting our onion and natural and cultural biodiversity, funded by the Campania Region and organized by Scabec. Since 2019 we have been participating in an Interreg Project on the Mediterranean Diet ""MD.net - When brand meets people"" promoted by the Campania Region with numerous European partners. Since 2019 we have been participating in ecological days, together with other institutional bodies in the area, to collect waste abandoned in our woods to protect the environment in which we live while safeguarding everyone's health. We are completing the bureaucratic process for the establishment of the Vatolla Onion Slow Food Presidium."

- Carob is a wild Mediterranean plant, organic, without treatment. It grows on our islands and is thought to have been in the area before the population. - We are a small family business from Zgornja Polskava with a brand called Maja hrustljavčki. The project involves husband Marjan, wife Renata and daughters Jana and Maja. Maja is one of the most common names in Slovenia and at the same time the name of our youngest daughter, where the idea for our branding comes from. We have been lyophilizing fruit for four years. Lyophilization is a special low-temperature drying process consisting of rapid cooling of food to low temperatures and extraction of crystal-bound water. Lyophilization is based on deep freezing of water in the fruit, followed by reducing the pressure and adding enough heat to sublimate the frozen water in the fruit directly from the solid to the gaseous state. After removing the water, all foods retain their shape, taste, structure, color, aroma, nutritional value and, of course, all vitamins and minerals. The process also preserves a 100% proportion of fruits, vegetables, herbs without added sugar, preservatives or dyes. Drying by lyophilization, however, actually protects the biochemical and enzymatic composition of foods. The process ensures an unlimited shelf life of food when properly stored in an airtight glass container. Lyophilized fruits, vegetables and herbs have a positive effect on health. Which means that such foods promote optimal health and reduce the risk of developing modern-day diseases. It is these properties that are extremely applicable to athletes, children in kindergartens and schools, the elderly population, vegans, metabolites, vegetarians, diabetics, confectioners, cooks and honey farmers. We designed two packages, one student, 370 ml, and family, 720 ml.
