  • Hi everyone, and what a beautiful thread to start with!

I’m Bill Christodoulou, representing the North Aegean region and specifically the island of Lesvos. I’m part of the Med Diet project here with Eloris S.A., and I couldn’t agree more, the food is just the excuse! the real gem is the company.

If you want to understand the social ritual of the table on our island, you just have to look at two things: our Kafeneio (coffee shop) culture and our Panigiria (village festivals).

Go into any traditional cafe or ouzeri in Lesvos, and you’ll see that nobody drinks ouzo alone. It’s a collective ritual. You sit down, order a bottle, and the table fills up with mezedes (small sharing plates like local ladotyri cheese, salted sardines), or giuzlemedes (like cheese pies). Everyone eats from the same plates, sips slowly, and talks for hours. The food is there to keep the conversation going, and everyone is welcome to join the table.
But the ultimate example of community harmony is our village festivals (panigiria). We make a traditional ritual dish called Keskeki, meat and wheat boiled for hours in massive pots over open fires. What makes it beautiful isn’t the recipe, but the effort: the locals take turns stirring these giant pots all night long. The next day, it’s served to thousands of people sitting together at massive communal tables. It completely erases any social differences everyone eats the same food, laughs, and dances together.

For us, the Med Diet isn’t about just following a recipe. It’s an open invitation to slow down, share and connect.

Excited to read about your local customs too!

    Best,
    Bill
